One Corner Main Page The New Book on Suzuki Roshi [It was to be To Shine One Corner] [I guess when this was written we'd decided against that but turns out that name stuck - until it goes back in print as Zen Is Right Here, Teaching Stories and Anecdotes of Shunryu Suzuki, Author of Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind - DC, 5-07] 2-02-2000 --As I mentioned before, I'm working on a new book about Suzuki Roshi, a short book of encounters with him, things he said, vignettes. My agent, wife, and, it seems, the publisher, are in pretty close agreement as to what it will be like. Each entry will be under a page long and some may be as short as one line. Each entry (story, memory, quote) will occupy the whole page. Take a look at the so far sparsely developed Suzuki Stories section of this site and you will get an idea of what its contents will be like. I just added three stories. As with Crooked Cucumber, sale of this book will help to support Suzuki Roshi archiving, the Cucumber Project. Of course I am using stories I've already collected, though I have to do a lot of searching through my files. But it should be done this spring and out early next year. What should the books name be? The book doesn't have a name yet. I'm working with the tentative subtitle of "Encounters with Suzuki Roshi. (I may not use his full name Shunryu Suzuki because of the trouble people have with Shunryu, though Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind and Crooked Cucumber and Branching Streams use Shunryu in the subtitles or on the cover. Would "Encounters with Shunryu Suzuki" be better? We are looking at some possibilities for the title. I'd be interested in feedback or suggestions. Probably something from one of his lectures. One idea is Letters from Emptiness: Encounters with Suzuki Roshi. Another is To Shine One Corner of the World: Encounters with Suzuki Roshi. I've also used the temporary name Suzuki Roshi Stories. What do you think? |
